Anime: Dragon Half

Based on a manga by Ryusuke Mita spanning 1988 to 1994, Dragon Half is a two-episode OVA series from 1993. I would call its genre “weird high fantasy.” It was on my “to-watch” list for a long time after occasionally seeing some of its heavily stylized art.

This anime is a hit for me right from the concept- it’s about the adventures of Mink, the progeny of a hero and a dragon that he was sent to slay, but fell in love with instead. Her adventures (in the OVAs anyway) mostly revolve around the object of her affectations, the dragon slayer/popstar Dick Saucer. By the way, there’s television and music CDs in this medieval high fantasy world.

I think the art is the strongest thing about the Dragon Half OVAs. Most of it falls somewhere on the spectrum of chibi/SD with rather few shots that include full-detail, full-height models of the characters. Weirdly enough, it seems like the abundance of chibi art is treated as a weakness of this series by reviewers across websites, but I would say it’s actually one of the strengths. Dragon Half has an extremely infectious and likable style for its chibi art and is consistently a joy to look at.

Just look at the pleasant way he rotates, and the appealing way the curves of his bent leg become straight lines on the final frame for a lot of subconscious visual interest. WOW!

The chibis are sometimes super-compressed, harkening back to the 16×16 pixel character sprites of old JRPGs, and sometimes a bit taller; but they’re always very cute, the exaggerated expressions are adorable and they are a treat to see in motion. Generally, I think chibi sequences in anime tend not to have too many frames or detail put into them, but you can tell the animators at Production I.G really thought about the shapes as these characters moved around in 3D space for the more dynamic shots and movements. In the words of a tumblr post about lizards, they are so shaped.

That said, it’s not bad aside from the art- the antics of its immensely likable villains are very amusing. The first episode is great with tons of variety and very few hiccups; the second episode doesn’t quite match the energy and highs of the first episode, and it kind of feels like they were trying to make it hornier (a lot, comparatively to the first episode) to drive success up. Which, I’m not gonna act like some morality police here, but it just didn’t work for me personally.

You might want to skip the ending song.

He is so fucking cute
